Gritsch 1000-Eimerberg Riesling Smaragd 2003
Wednesday, April 18, 2007
We opened this bottle the other nite but I didn't get a chance to write about it. This came from the Austrian wine flight Erika won back in December.
The nose on this wine was very fresh, light and clean. You had hints of pear and apple and like a Chardonnay a bit of oak. It was a very rich Riesling, not too sweet and also one that packed a punch. If you look at most European Rieslings they usually top out at 10-12%. This one was 14% which surprised me. You could taste a bit of the alcohol but it wasn't over the top. Wine Spectator just wrote about the 2005 German vintage and how it was the best in decades. After drinking this wine, my interest in whites has grown tremendously and I have been on the quest to find many more like this one.
