New Stamped Concrete Patio

Click on the photos for a bigger picture....
They just finished our new patio today and its amazing. We went with a stamped concrete instead of paver stones and I am really happy with it. We were not planning on making it as big but I am glad we did since it will allow us more room for entertaining. The walkway rocks and we will line it with solar lamps and landscaping. Now we need to find some loungers, the big dilemma is between wood/metal/mesh/cushion.
I know the grass looks like crap but I will fix what I can this year and contemplate new stuff at a later date.

Stargazer Lily and Siberian Iris
Fern and Hosta
Raspberries
Here are a few photos of our yard and some of my favorite things growing. The one section is about 8x12 and is full of a wide range of lilies. I have 7 ferns that are starting, these are my favorite because they have leaves ranging between 1-2 ft. I had a couple other ferns behind this one but I don't think they made it this year. They were given to me last year but were in a pretty weak state, I may have to pick up a few more. The hosta is a pretty good size once its fully opened and I believe this one flowers later in the year. The raspberries started out as 2 sticks in the ground and as you can see, taken over. We only had a couple berries last year but the plants have quadrupled in size and number so I expect many more. I am excited to see what this summer brings us, I have spent 3 years adding/deleting plants throughout the yard and most things are big enough to fill in the space. My goal is to have no ground visable and things flowering all summer long. We will be planting the gardens in a couple weeks which will add another dimension to the yard. I will keep you posted with our progess.

How We Spent Our Weekend
Monday, April 23, 2007
It was the best weekend of the year so far and although we were outside we were digging up grass. This is part of the area of the new patio we are building this summer. To the left of the cutoff it will stretch 6 more feet which I still need to tear up. We are going to have the patio wrap around the side of the house as well. We have some paver stones that need to be taken up but that shouldn't be a problem. We have decided that stamped concrete may be the answer but are waiting on the price. I have a feeling we will go this route but will save money since we are doing most of the labor when it comes to the prep work. Instead of buying more dirt for our garden we will use the stuff here and save money as well as doing the digging needed for the patio. We are going to leave the section with the vine and plants, it will be a built in planter which will look very cool in full bloom. Its been a lot of work but in the end we will have an area for lounge chairs, our grill, outdoor table and misc potted plants.
I am a bit worried about the plants already growing, they came up early and were hit by the cold spell a couple weeks ago. The tops of the leaves are dead but I think the rest of them are ok. I will have to wait and see what happens.

The Power Of A Dyson
Thursday, December 14, 2006
Last week we broke down and bought a Dyson vaccum and I spent the last hour vaccuming everything in sight. I tackled the stairs, walls, corners, vents, rugs, tile and any carpet we have in our house. It has an expandable hose where you can reach up to hit corners and along the baseboards. We have a long hair cat that sheds on everything so the animal model was perfect for us. I know I sound like an infomercial but this thing rocks and everyone should own one. This model is on clearance at Bed Bath & Beyond so you automatically save $50, take those 20% off coupons you get in the mail and save another $100.
