Donna Laura Sangiovese Di Toscana

The 1st drink of this wine was exactly what I have been complaining about for years now, a lot of Italian wine is weak, thin and watery. I then took a step back and let it sit for 30 minutes and tried again. This time the wine was much better, it had a bit more body and a hint of spice you would expect from a Sangiovese. Although it is still thin it has some fruit up front, nothing overpowering like a cab or pinot noir but a hint of sweetness. It finishes with low tannin and a bit of pepper that lingers on your tongue. This wine comes from the Tuscany region of Italy, home of the Chianti Classico. Label wise, its creative and more appealing than traditional Italian bottles.

I am still on the fence with this one tho, I do like Sangiovese but I tend to like ones that come from California. I know thats all wrong but CA ones tend to be a bit more robust. One of my favorites, Chariot Sangiovese comes from Jim Neal Vineyards in the CA central coast. I will continue searching for the perfect Italian Sangiovese and keep you posted.

Donna Laura specializes in producing wines from first-class Sangiovese grapes grown in the Castelnuovo Berardenga region of Chianti Classico. This new venture, spearheaded by owner Lia Tolaini-Banville, seeks to fulfill a need in the American market for high quality Sangiovese wines at an accessible price point that are both representative of the terroir of the region, as well as international in style.

The name Ali means “wings” in Italian and is also the name of the winery owner Lia Tolaini-Banville’s daughter. The artwork from the label is a detail of Cupid from the original artwork for the Bramosia Chianti Classico label by Rik Olsen.
