If you have never heard of Coldcut, they are the creators of the Ninja Tune and NTone trip hop record labels. Some of the best trip hop came from Ninja Tune throughout the 90s. The duo Coldcut have released their own music along with producing/working on others in the trip hop community. Their latest cd, Sound Mirrors is a collage of different sounds. It stays true to the underground beats but strays at times with different vocal styles.

Track 1 "Everything Is Under Control" starts off with Jon Spencer (Blues Explosion fame) and his trademark swagger. Its a politically motivated song, attacking current US and world policy with a rockin beat. The rest of the cd winds around underground rap, spoken word, and house beats. I found this cd hard to listen to straight thru, its more of a pick and choose. Track 6 "Whistle And Prayer" is a stripped down, haunting song reminicent of old Tricky. The cd concludes with track 12 "Sound Mirrors" a beautiful trip hop instrumental full of piano, scratchy beats and a building cresendo.
