New NAS On The Streets

Well its not exactly new but new to many outside of the geek world. Hammer Storage has released a NAS (Network Attached Storage) drive for all of your digital media needs. Everyone has NAS's for sale but Hammer has taken it up a notch. They are selling one terabyte with a 2 TB surfacing this summer. RAID spanning is also built in, the ability to protect your data since the hard drive is partitioned a specific way to provide a backup if one drive fails. You can configure the drive for access via the web if you are away from home. Starting at $500 for the 1 TB is a bit steep so I don't see myself getting one anytime soon.

I am still trying to figure out the best way for digital media distribution thru my home and so far there is not one player which has my vote. The Sonos system is very cool but expensive and you need a centralized media server and I don't think it would run off of a device like this. You have the AppleTV which is cool but really created for those who buy a lot from iTunes. It could work for me but then you need to use your TV as your access point. Olive has a beautiful device but not very practical if you do not have a good home theatre setup. What I really want is one device to hold all my content and wireless access via a handheld device with a screen. I want this for no more than $300 and with unlimited hard drive space. I do not want to run a 2nd computer, I want the device to be its own OS and power supply. I really want the AppleTV footprint and the Sonos remote combined into one unit with no less than 1 TB of space. Am I asking for a lot, yeah and will probably be talking about the same thing next year.....
