The Moaners - Blackwing Yalobusha (2007)

I found this cd the other day on eMusic and have been listening to it quite regularly. The Moaners are a 2 peice female indie/blues punk/garage rock band from Chapel Hill, NC. For starters, they are nothing like the White Stripes, just another 2 piece with a slighty different sound. If anything I would say they are closer to The Kills than anything. The Moaners take a moodier approach to the music and add a bit of soul. Its not hard pounding, viseral garage rock nor is it straight up pretentious indie rock.

The cd starts off with "Yankee On My Shoulder", a southern twang with plenty of toe tappin beats. Its raw but not heavy, the distortion is the perfect pitch to blend nicely with the guitar melody. Track 2 "Dreamin About Flyin" strips the blues punk and settles into a minor chord dirge. Track 4 "Brainwash" picks up the tempo and layers esclating scales over some some aggessive drums.

The vocals remind me of the first Ravonettes cd where everything was recorded in a minor key. The whole record has that approach but does a great job at broadening the sound. Unlike The Kills, The Moaners keep their emotions in check and burrow thru without raising their voices. You will not find any screaming on this record, the vocals are kept in check and the guitar provides the aggression. I found the whole cd enjoyable but not something I would listen to from start to finish. Add a few songs to your ipod and you will not be disappointed.
