Has Shoegazing Returned?

The latest UK sensations The Fields have given us a 7 song EP full of swirling guitars, lush vocals and electronic layers. The Fields used MySpace to connect with fans and score a major label distribution. They are signed to Black Lab but this label is affiliated with Atlantic Records.
Track 1 "Song For The Field" has hints of Soundtrack of our Lives and South with a heavy psychedelic feel. Track 2 "Isobel" slows down the tempo and blends a folky acoustic beat with a bit of electronic atmosphere. Track 3 "Brittlesticks" sheds some of the layers and puts forth some classic brit rock. Track 4 "Sisters" starts off as Bluegrass with guitar and singing but adds keys and an electronic sound midway through. Track 5 "Roll Down The Hill" is a blend of shoegazer and trip hop with a slow tempo drifting through space. There are also Sigor Ros vocals dotting the landscape. Track 6 "Heretic" gets back to a beat and adds echoing vocals to a wall of sound. Track 7 "A Slow Crawling Hand" is more of a soundtrack than a song, with no singing and background sonance.
I like the style this band has given us but I think they need to streamline their direction for their full length. The folk mixed with electronic is good but they need to dump the Sigor Ros because its pretty boring. The cresendos and layers sound great and remind me of the first South record. I first heard The Fields on Woxy and then found their EP on eMusic.
