The Lemonheads

The Lemonheads are back with a new cd and a new band. Actually The Lemonheads are really only Evan Dando since he has never had a full and consistant lineup. This time around Evan has added old Decendents members Bill Stevenson and Josh Lattanzi to the mix. Songwise its still classic Lemonheads but without the alt country twinge and bubblegum pop. If you are a fan of The Decendents or their alter ego All, you can definitely hear the influences going on. The songs are short and packed with power but are not punk. Track 1 "Black Gown" starts off with a slow piano followed by some feedback and finally rolls into Evan's singing and toe tapping beat. The little guitar bits that stick out are classic Decendents/All. Track 2 " Become The Enemy" is a bit slower, more melodic and lacking on the production. Track 5 "Poughkeepsie" brings in the catchy pop with a bit more heavy guitar than before. Track 7 "No Backbone" is the current single and isn't too bad. Its a mid/high tempo song with high hat and snare hits and swirling guitar courtesy of J Mascis.

Overall, I give the cd a 7/10 its good but a bit on the thin side. Evan wanted to get back to basics and strip down all the heavy production which he accomplished. This is what The Lemonheads sounded like back in the day before Evan was the 90s heart throb. My only complaint comes from being too much Decendents/All in the sound, yes you have 2 members of the band but they should have left their trademark riffs to their old band and not bring it over here.
