Wait

I just downloaded the new Polyphonic Spree "Wait" EP from iTunes this afternoon. I had 3 free downloads from a friend who collects baseball cards so it only cost me $1.99. There are 2 new songs and 3 covers.
Track 1 "Mental Caberet": Is an original song that breaks from the indie gospel sound and actually has a melody. The background chorus is still present but there is a beat, with some bass, keyboards and handclaps. If this is any glimpse as to what the new cd will sound like, I am very excited.
Track 2 "Love My Way": This is a Psychadelic Furs cover and stays true to the original. You have more vocals but the standard sound is still present with a vibraphone instead of keyboard. Between Grant Lee Philips and Nouvelle Vague, the whole 80s college rock scene is in a cover frenzy.
Track 3 "Sonic Bloom" is a cover of Tim Delaughter's previous band Tripping Daisy and is very good. I don't remember the original and don't seem to have a copy so I will have to go with this one.
Track 4 "Lithium" is a Nirvana cover and it blew me away. Its big and engulfs you. I am excited to listen to on headphones. Its has a commercial jingle to it since you don't expect Nirvana to sound so full and happy. I was expecting a pianoesque Tori Amos song but its the exact opposite.
Track 5 "I'm Calling" is an original and starts off soft. It builds into a piano laden campfire singalong. The original songs are more cohesive than ones in the past which I really appreciate. The Flaming Lips comparisions will come along but I think Tim Delaughter has finally found a place for his band.
Overall, the EP is great, I highly recommend everyone pick it up. Even if its just for the Lithium cover which is probably the best song on the cd. I do like Mental Caberet and if I had to lose one song it would be the Psych Furs cover. I give this an 8/10.
