Abramoff Sentencing Delayed

Recall that earlier this month, a federal judge refused to grant admitted felon and Republican super-lobbyist Jack Abramoff a delay in his sentencing for bribery and other crimes. Abbe Lowell, Abramoff's lawyer, wanted to delay the sentencing because of the explosive nature of what would be disclosed in the process:

"We will name names. We will provide the public with evidence of what is going on out there," Lowell said. "It seems to me that is not in the interest of law enforcement."

Today, we learn that the federal government now has asked for--and was granted--a delay in Abramoff's sentencing:

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A federal judge Friday delayed sentencing of Jack Abramoff, a move the prosecutors requested to further the former lobbyist's cooperation with their investigation. [...]

Federal investigators, citing Abramoff's cooperation, wanted to defer until at least June a status conference, initially set for next week, that could have led to Abramoff's sentencing.

The delay is "in order to allow Mr. Abramoff's cooperation to continue uninterrupted," according to a joint motion for a new status conference filed late Thursday.

So Abramoff's sentencing has been delayed from March 29th to sometime after June. Not only is Abramoff giving the feds something so juicy they want him to keep talking, but the "naming of names" will now take place closer to midterm elections. In the months before voters go to the polls to determine the fate of the Republican majority in Congress, Abramoff's summer sentencing will cause the Republican culture of corruption to dominate the campaign news cycle. This latest development has to make Republicans very, very nervous.
