One of my favorite things to eat are gourmet breakfasts and I have been dying for some for a while now. While living out in Oregon, I was surrounded by restaurants full of dirty hippies in the kitchen but the food was excellent. Instead of hashbrowns, there were cubed style potatoes bursting with flavor. French toast covered in a berry compote and eggs benedict over poached salmon. Yes there were the veggie staples, tofu, tempeh, soy based products but don't let these scare you. Made with hippie love, these were very tasty. I am always complaining to Erika about how its all coney islands here, boring eggs, french toast and those dreaded hash browns. If you are going to serve potatoes, cut them up and add some seasonings, don't serve half cooked, greasy potato sticks. Finally the internet saved us, the other day Erika found on the freep.com an article talking about the upscale restaurants around town that feature gourmet breakfasts. This morning, we headed out to try one and see if they can compete with Oregon.
Erika and I went to the Fly Trap down in Ferndale for breakfast this morning and it was excellent, I highly recommend it. I had the gingerbread waffles with sauted apples and cinnamon syrup and a side of garlic potatoes. Erika had an egg scramble with basil, tomato, and black olives. Our wait was about 20 minutes, there are only 40 seats but worth it. Toast down the street had too long of a wait, that one we need to get up a bit earlier for. Price wise, its not bad at all $17.50 plus tip. Other than these 2, there is a one in Clawson on Main St., Recipes in Troy on Crooks and The Original Pancake House in Birmingham which is good but pricy and cash only.
I didn't take the pic just found it on the net from some review.
