The Pipettes

I would like to thank Will and Ben for introducing me to the Pipettes, an updated version of the 60's Phil Spector wall of sound. The cd starts off with "We Are The Pipettes" a space age bachelor pad full of hammond organs. Track 2 "Pull Shapes" settles into the 60s summer vibe with alternating singing done by the trio of women. Track 3 " Why Did You Stay" could have easily come from the Grease soundtrack. Track 6 "Judy" has the finger snaps and one note keyboards that fills out into a foot tapping/head bobbing summer fling. Track 8 "You're Kisses Are Wasted On Me" reminds me of the Donnas trying to be retro, not bad but there are better songs on the cd. Track 12 "One Night Stand" is full of cliches and very riot grrl with its lyrics. Some of the songs could be slipped onto an oldies station and if anyone had their hearing aids turned up may notice they don't belong. I do like the cd, its nothing I would probably listen to all the time but its refreshing and fun. I am afraid it may be kitsch for some and be forgotten within the next 6 months. eMusic has it on their site so before its too late check it out and take a trip back to the era of bubblegum pop.
