Grant Lee Phillips is back with a new cd, well not new music, its all covers. What makes this cd great is who he has chosen to cover. It starts off with The Pixies "Wave Of Mutilation" then goes into New Order's "Age of Consent". Grant doesn't forget where New Order got their start and covers Joy Division's "The Eternal". You also have Echo's "The Killing Moon", The Psych Furs "Love My Way", The Church "Under the Milky Way" and Nick Cave's "City of Refuge". But wait there's still more, R.E.M's "So. Central Rain", The Cure "Boys Don't Cry" and finishing the cd off with The Smith's "Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me".
All songs are played in an acoustic style as if Grant was sitting around a campfire with friends just playing songs from the radio. Grant's brilliance has given all these songs new life, not that they needed it, just a new perspective on what made the 80s so great. Nearly all these musicians are still together making music which says a lot these days. Yeah there were breakups, and reunions and some who lost members but for the most part they are still alive and kicking. These are some of my favorite bands and to have one of my favorite musicians cover them, makes it even better. Hey Grant if you read this, come on back to Detroit, I checked your site and you have a few shows in the surrounding area, what gives?
