Best Of.....

I just got the Replacements "Don't You Know Who I Think I Was?" greatest hits and although they already have one out, this has 2 new songs. Unfortunately, the last greatest hits did not include anything from the first 3 records so it was not complete. This one has 20 songs long with 2 new ones recorded just for the record. The 1st "Message To The Boys" sounds a lot like Paul Westerberg from the "14 Songs" era. Its not bad, its a toe tappin, straight forward rock song. The 2nd song " Pool & Dive" is a bit better. It is still all Paul, but there is a hint of old Mats in it. This one has a bit of the "Don't Tell A Soul" sound to it, a slightly heavier head bobbin guitar song.

"Tim" would have to be my favorite Mats record, but everyone of them has a slew of great songs. You see the band grow and drift apart with each record, the only survivor being Paul. From the beginning you have a punk rock outfit full of drunks and by the end its an introspective into Paul's soul on "All Shook Down". I never got to see them live but I did seen Paul solo and he was amazing. It was probably one of my favorite shows, the crowd was older and everyone just sang along and had a great time. The Replacements are one of the best bands from the 80s and probably the most forgotten. Everyone can name a Cure, Depeche Mode or R.E.M. song but few could come up with a Replacements. They are the band that if the song is on in the background, you bob your head and say to yourself, I remember this song but have no clue who it is. I hope reading this sparks your interest to go back and rediscover this band.
